Omid Online School – hope through education

"Omid" means "hope" – and that is exactly what this school gives young girls in Afghanistan: an education the Taliban regime denies them. We support the project together with the Filippas Engel Foundation.

Afghanistan's first online school

The Omid Online School was co-founded in April 2022 by Zahra Hashimi, who lives in Vienna today. As Afghanistan's first online school, it offers girls from grade 7 onwards free access to high-quality education – supported by a network of dedicated female teachers and volunteers.

Hundreds of schoolgirls receive daily lessons in a wide range of subjects. Some of them have already graduated and were supported in their transition to university. For her commitment, Zahra Hashimi received the first-ever Alumni Award of the former laureates of Filippas Engel in 2024.

The mission

The Omid Online School wants to overcome barriers to education – firmly believing in the fundamental right to education for everyone, regardless of gender, origin or political circumstances. Because education is not just a basic right: it is the key to self-determination as well as social and economic progress.

These young girls hold enormous talents and potential that would remain untapped without access to education. The school gives them the tools and knowledge to pursue their dreams and become confident, active members of society.

What comes next

The school wants to reach even more remote regions of Afghanistan and expand its technological infrastructure. Its work is currently financed entirely by donations – and this is exactly where your deposit comes in: every donated bottle helps secure these girls' lessons for the long term.
